    Cool hammock charity crossover

Hopefully this is on-topic and suitable for the forum but mods please feel free to move it if needed.

A month or so back I was fortunate enough to attend the Appalachian Mountain Club's Mountain Leadership School - great experience and I made some great new friends! Anyway, while on the trip I of course talked a little about hammocks and come to find out one of the group members has a friend who runs the Action Hero Network and Hanging Hugs groups. I thought it would be cool to share with the HammockForums since it's the first charity I've ever heard of that ties in to our beloved hammocks Note: I'm not affiliated in any way, just passing it on since I thought you all might get a kick out of it.

Seems a little bit of an odd combo but the hammocks are directly tied to the charity two ways. First is they make hammocks to donate to orphanages (Uganda and Haiti, I think) to provide beds for kids, and they donate sewing machines for the purposes of making hammocks in-country. Secondly, they sell these unique nylon hammocks they call Hanging Hugs that are lined with a fur-like material:

The profit from the hammocks goes toward funding orphanages and disaster relief projects and such. I thought it was an interesting approach to funding a charity, and the lined hammocks are something I hadn't seen before. This page has a bunch of pictures and stuff showing different types - there's a waterproof one kind of like the old Hybrid Hammocks, various fabrics etc. I have to admit the fur-lined ones look comfortable, even if they're not really my style

Those look great! I like the hammock/tarp idea, since when im out there's always someone who turns up without a hammock and I rarely leave without some kind of tarp, even in the summer.

Yeah I always thought the hammock/tarp combos like the All-Terrain Hybrid Hammock had potential. It's rarely a bad thing to have an extra tarp if it's raining

I like what they are trying to do - interesting site.

Just looked at some of the vids though and they are a little weird.

Yeah, the vids are more people hanging out than actual information about the hammocks.

He has an email address posted so you can email for more info, but the web page was mostly pictures and it wasn't especially informative. Nothing about the dimensions is written, although he does say in the middle of a video that the regular hammock is 3 meters and a kids hammock is 6 1/2 feet. Nothing about the width. They look like nice, simple hammocks.

I liked the main Hanging Hugs charity site, it seemed better set up than actionheroesnetwork.net/hammocks. And the photo gallery has a ton of great pictures.

i had emailed him with some questions but none pertaining to the hammock specifics. but since you get to choose the materials, im sure you work out the width too. probably based of things like ENO's and similar commercial hammocks. the ones i saw certainly were nice and wide.

Well, judging by my exploration of the website, I think they're hippies.
