Exclamation Check your fabric! (Especially at Wal)

I am sure this is a step you more common-sense laden folk never skip, but something happened to me while measuring my fabric today...I was sizing my fabric, and a multitude of things happened that I will be avoiding in the future!

First, I didn't even notice at the store, but the fabric I have is only about 52" wide. I was upset about this because I have about 18 yards of the stuff! So, I will now be checking everytime at the store...

I decided to go ahead and try to make a hammock out of it, anyway...what do I have to lose? So, I lay it out, measure out the length and mark it...then when I stand back to look at the line, I see this horrible plastic price tag peice going right through the fabric! So, I cannot use this part of the fabric, I will have to remeasure the whole thing...but, then I notice a flaw in the fabric going up the whole roll lengthwise! Okay, now I am going to return this!

I realize looking back that I was so excited to get going that I didn't even really look at anything but the weight, type, and if it was coated or not. If I had just looked closer, I would have seen the flaw in the fabric and noticed the width...live and learn!

Yeah I have noticed some iffy fabric there. I think in the end the thing to keep in mind is that it is $1 a yard and something you get what you pay for.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

I found some of the same things at WM. Actually, I make my hammocks all 48 inches wide now, and I too found a flaw running the full length of the fabric, but it was near one edge and would not have hurt the structural integrity of the hammock. Perhaps yours is the same. I hope so. Mule
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

I bought a blt of $1 ripstop that had those plastic tage about every 4 ft. I was not getting it to make a hammock so I wasn't too worried about them. I'm going to make 2 windbreakers for my boys out of them.

I was in my local walmart the other day and was talking to the lady there. She asked what I was looking for and I told her and she said she didn't see any in this shipment. She knew what I was talking about when I said sil-nylon. She stated she hates when they do get it because it's too slippery. I should of given her my number and said just leave it in the back next time and I'll come take it all off her hands.

She must be smarter than the people working at my locale. Anytime I mention DWR or Sil-Nylon I just get the goat stare...

There is one at my local walmart that knows what I am talking about, most think I'm making kites out of it.

    Kites

You just threw me back into the 1950's!!
My grandfather used to make kites for me out of balsa wood crossbars and newspaper. I had so much fun painting them then flying those things!

    Dang... kites!
    Wow...
