    Question Tactel Hammock fabric?

    I came across this olive green Tactel fabric;

    http://ukfabricsonline.com/nylon-fabric/olive-tactel

This is around the 2oz/sqm mark I've been told, so its about right for a single layer for me.

I've never used anything with Tactel, but my google fu has found some desirable properties for use in hammocks ;-

    Hardwearing,
    Highly breathable,
    Wicking action,
Very soft next to the skin,
    Lightweight.

I'm not sure if its windproof or not, or how slippery it is.

Its presently used in 1000 mile socks as the hardwearing wicking liner, underwear and sleeping bags as the liner fabric.

My Pertex hammocks feel warmer and more comfortable than my parachute nylon jobs, I'm assuming because Pertex is highly wicking.

Has anyone worked with this stuff before or used it in existing gear?

Any insight would be well appreciated from the great HF hivemind before I take a punt on it

    Thanks in advance, Pete.

One thing to clear up...from the website..."Tactel is a special type of nylon. It is lightweight, very sofy and dries 8 times quicker than cotton. It is also know as Lyocell." Is it nylon or lyocell?

I don't trust all the info on the site. They have quilted fleece backed nylon that weighs 55g/sqm!

I've bought fabrics from them before though and the fabric has been what they say-the info has been less than 100% accurate, as you can see

At £2.99, worth a punt maybe? Sounds pretty good from the description.

Maybe not for a hammock but definitely looks like good material for a base layer.

I googled an looked around on a few sites. I think it sounds good, but I saw that they make a knit, and I could not find it clearly stated that there was a difference between the knit (very stretchy) and Tactel fabric. I would probably order a swatch to see what it was about before I ordered a bunch. And that olive green is forest green, or hunter.
An emergency of my own making...is still an emergency.

Thanks for the input people and your research Hippofeet (Love the nick BTW ).

I've found some on Ebay that was newly listed today, waiting for a response as to the weight and stretchiness.

I didn't realise until I started looking at this stuff that it comes in ripstop and DWR and is extensively used in sleeping bags for the inside and out.

Lots of it is mixed with lycra though

There might be slight sag issues with lycra

I'll post up when I get a repsonse from them.

I'm surprised at the lack of info about this fabric as it seems to be used quite extensively in gear.

Had a reply from vendor on Ebay for this

    No stretch at all

    Weight- 140g/m2

I'll hunt for some lighter Tactel.
