That sound great I'll put my time in.
Oops I spoke too soon. I'm going to New Hampshire that week end. Sorry.

I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. - E. B. White (1899 - 1985)
Fair warning to all...I'm an old man and a bit of a fattie, so I won't be burning up the trail...it's about 6 miles and roughly 1000 feet in elevation to Flowed Lands...that being said, I don't mind if people move ahead...I'll catch up eventually.
My plan is to basecamp at Flowed Lands and make a trip to Hanging Spear Falls, but there are 6-8 High Peaks within 5 miles of where we'll be camping, including NY's highest, Mt. Marcy, so feel free to plan a peak bagging expedition as well while we're up there...I won't join you on the 46ers, but you can leave your gear in camp and we'll be there when you get back.

Something was tickling at the back of my brain for the last day or so, so I did some goolging this morning when I woke up, and confirmed that bear canisters are required in this portion of the High Peaks...
I much prefer bear-bagging, but have heard of people getting ticketed for not following the regs, so I found a good source of info about bear canisters: http://calipidder.com/wp/2009/05/bea...erent-designs/
I ended up buying the Bare Boxer Contender, the lightest and cheapest and smallest bear canister reviewed...

Just in the Eastern High Peaks...everywhere else in the ADKs, it's your choice...I generally just bear-bag, and have been fine despite having camped at least once a month for the last 3 years...

The trails in the whole Eastern High Peaks area were closed after Hurricane Irene, but have now re-opened for use...there are lots of new slides and changed features due to the storm, but the trip is still on!

===> Bear Canisters are a good thing - especially if you get far afield. I use a Garcia Bear Canister. A bit large (not bad at all!) but impervious to bears, and pretty much scents! I use Alok ziplock bags for real smellies (17K times less permeable to smells) inside the Garcia.
Last thing I want is my food disappearing in the wild! And I am FAR more concerned about other critters - Racoons, especially - raiding my larder!

I was doing some reading about the trail up into Flowed Lands via Calamity Brook, and then back down via the trail along the Opalescent River...it seems probable (especially with recent hurricane damage) that there could be at least one river crossing without benefit of a bridge.
I'm bringing a pair of crocs along on this trip, both as campshoes and for use in crossing rivers to keep my boots dry...it might not be a bad idea for others on this trip to do the same.
