I use whoopie slings connected to tree straps with trail sticks in a marlin spike hitch. The marlin spike hitch lets me connect right up against the tree if I need to. I'm looking to by-pass the whoopie sling part of the equation, still using the tree straps. Are you saying to wrap the amsteel around the tree and by-pass the straps?

No, go ahead and use the strap/stick/msh/whoopie combo like you normally do, and wrap the whole lashup. I hope this makes sense outside of my feeble brain.

Pipsissewa, the way I did the wrap is like in shugs video, LINK to Shugs Video Page, Go to Video Part 3 and at about the 5:31 mark. The only thing different is your gonna be wrapping whoopie along with straps, so by trying to tuck the strap under the whoopie, (against the tree) it will protect the tree from the small diameter string. You will still need to connect your strap to your whoopie some how though. I used a carabiner, you could probably still use trail sticks as long as you make sure they will stay in place. Tension basically keeps things tight.

I have done that, but not with the intention of facilitating shorter hangs. Darn, why didn't I think of that

I did it so that I could remove the suspension from the hammock if the lines got wet or straps coated with tree sap. I had the suspension fastened to the loop with Dutch biners (what else? ha!).

I didn't even think of attaching the loops to a marlin spike on the straps. That would really work in close quarters. Good one Pips!
