    pronounce bowline knot?

Dumb question from an unashamed dummy. Is the "bowline knot" pronounced like the bow of a ship or like the bow of a violin? I assume bow of a ship, since knot names are often coming from sailors.

Your assumption is reasonable. Just remember, sailors always abbreviate everythin'. (blame the British)
So take out the 'W' and the 'E', use a long-o and a short-i and say it quickly - you get bolin.

PS. IMHO its the most useful of all knots.

    Bo-Lyn

It's pronunciation is not quite as important as it's looks, but to be yar, one must do both correctly!

Every climbing or knots class I've ever had it was the "Bo-Lyn" pronunciation

But if you were on a vessel, you would cast off the bow line (Bow like the part of a ship, or bending in half in front of the Queen)

(Perhaps it is fixed to the ship with a "bo-lyn" though??)

    Oxford dictionary for - bowline

I just love good online dictionaries. Though I admit I don't pronounce the "i" as a long "i" (i.e., "eye").
