    Help Finding Something

Hey i am new here but in my short time here i have learned a lot about making a hammock. but i have hit a issue. I have make 1 DIY Hennessy clone and i have 3 more to make (Wife and Two Boys 7 and 5). And I am trying to find a cheaper alternative to a top/under quilt. because that would be a lot of down costing around grand. i have seen mentioned about recycling a sleeping bag, but i cant find a write up on how to do it or pics of one finished to get a good game plan for this. i have been looking at goodwill's ,thrift stores and craigslist for cheap down items to slowly collect the down to make decent ones but as we all know that could take a year or so till i get enough. any advice would be great.

I went to WM and purchased two $9.99 sleeping bags. I cut the sleeping bags in half made a TQ and UQ per sleeping bag. I'll try to get some pictures up soon. But they work great.

I know there are lots of posts on converting Sleeping bags to UQ just takes some time to search them all. As for fleece UQ you basically take fleece that around 4 inches longer and wider than you want your UQ to be.

    1. Sew down the corners a few inches.
    2. (optional) cover new outside edge with grossgain for reinforcement and appearance.
    3. Sew 1 inch channels on the sides and ends.
    4. Feed shockcord through side channels for UQ suspension
    5. Feed shockcord through head and foot channels
    6. On one end of the head and foot channels feed the shockcord back on itself a few inches to double up on that side. This will be the anchor point.
    7. Stitch end with doubled over cord, being sure to catch the shock cord in stitching.
    8. Add cord lock to exiting end of shockcord.
    9. Hang and adjust suspension until it snugs up to bottom of the hammock.

At least this is how I made mine.

Although I figure a single layer fleece UQ might only get you down to about 60*F depending on how warm you sleep.
*Heaven best have trees, because I plan to lounge for eternity.

You can layer it up, if you aren't too worried about weight. I like fleece.

weight isn't an issue due to my kids being 5 and 7 we dont really make it far down a trail. lol we keep our hikes near rivers and streams right now so after a 1/2 mile in we can stop and swim, skip stones, and just rest. but as they get older our hikes will become longer and they will beable to carry more weight to. ( and by then i should be able to change the gear out to down)

I think that would be fine for me, down to really cold (40ish) but I am a cold sleeper.
