I grabbed some of Kayak Karl's gutter spikes. I sanded them down smooth, dulled the tip and about half an inch from the nail head, I drilled a hole. I took a continuous loop - your flavor of line - and larks headed it through the drilled hole. They aint going anywhere. These are all I use and work very well. +1 to painting them orange.

Orange disappears during the fall, I like my stakes to be BLUE.

This is what I do as well. Also use MSR V stakes. The needles hold remarkably well.

I have a set of the blue Easton Aluminum stakes and like them. (The blue are the smaller ones)

sounds like the groundhogs are a winner. but that offer from kayak karl sounds tempting, do the gutter spikes hold good in most soil, sorft and hard?

Mountainfitter 7" Ti stakes, painted in blue acrylic paint.

I carry bigger flouro yellow V-style alu stakes for windy conditions, not sure of the make but they are 12g each and have held my tarp soundly in some fun weather.
