    Bug net length

    I made a bug net.
Basically 2 pieces of SUL netting sewn together 10' long.

This is the drape over the ridgeline and add weight in pockets etc types of net.
I just left it full width, like 5' each side and folded over the bottom edges and made pockets.

Well it hangs down way to far, so what is a standard side width for one of these ??

I am figuring maybe 3.5' from ridgeline or would 3' be enough ??

Also I think I am going to trim the ends at an angle, but still leave most of the bottom open.

With your weight in it- I think you could figure out how much to trim off. I never made one but maybe you could shock cord the bottom so when you pull it over you you'd seal up the hole slightly without having to weight it down. Look at the one Wilderness Logics has for sale. That's a tried and true system. It may give you something to compare yours to.
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

True. I am going to sew the top/ridge to shorten it so I guess I could cloths pin it and check.

I just want something simple and SUL and the pockets looked interesting.
Watched a Ray Mears program where he had one of these and I liked it.

I had thought about sewing in a channel at the bottom edges of the pockets to run a piece of shock cord through.

I have shock cord on the bottom of mine that keeps it nice and shut under me. I just made a channel on the bottom like you would with a stuff sack and put on a cord lock to change the tightness if needed. I don't like zipper entries and fine this much easier. I've been contemplating making a video on how to make a bug net for a hammock.

Oh That would be Sweet! It would help me too cause I'm thinking about some type of DIY action on the bug net deal myself! Do it! OK, do it, Please.

I probably am in the next month. I am making an underquilt, tarp and hammock for my best friend's b-day in two weeks. After that I am going for a 5 day trip on the SHT.

However, I am making 3-4 bugnets for some friends who I got into hammocking and I figure that would be the perfect time to make a "How to" video for a bugnet. I love mine and it's as easy to make as a gathered end hammock.

    started on mine today

Hung my hammock and draped the noseeum net over the ridgeline to get the proper idea of length and also how much to let droop down. For me this was the easiest way since all of our diy hammocks are basically different in length. Will look at the diy projects to determine how I will close it off but right now I think I am going with velcro and not sew it to the hammock but both sides of the noseeum. B ut this could change as I read about others and how they did it.

That is very close to what I will end up with. 40-46 will probably be good.
Right now mine is just square but it has rock pockets all along the edge, IE I just folded the edge over about 5" and sewed some vertical lines up.

I think I am going to do tapered ends like yours but close the ends with velcro.

Here is a Ray Mears video that shows his setup.

I loosely followed the Famous Knotty's bug net designs. I've had not a bug problem since.
