Are there any wooden top-bar stand designs out there? I was thinking of something with a vertical top-bar support like this...

I made one that utilized 2 wooden (2x4) bipods joined by a wooden beam. The idea was for it to be portable, but that made it a little too loosey-goosey for my tastes. A fixed version would be quite doable, and relatively inexpensive.

Would that 45 degree support bar be inside the frame? (and thus under the hammock)?
An emergency of my own making...is still an emergency.
I would be worried about the stability of the feet, too. What about an a-frame design? Something like this very basic drawing :P I put two different ideas for bracing the top bar, one on the outside so it won't interfere with the hammock suspension, the other in the "traditional" inside position.
muledog19-
Your design is an inverted version of Risk's $25 Hammock Stand and I suspect the one OG is talking about too. I slept in a modified version of this stand for almost a year. Did the same mods OG is talking about and made it a permanent stand. There is no need at all for supports bracing the top bar. The forces are just about completely compressive. The feet, however, get wobbly quick if you don't have that diagonal brace.
Trust nobody!
I started with the Risk stand and later converted to this one. No bar/beam to fall on under me, just the ground(bad enough). This thing never gave even a fraction of an inch over 2 years, even after severe weathering on the untreated wood. The top bar really took all the load. But it was sure not very portable.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, there are a lot of similarities between the two designs. The biggest difference I see is Risk has a bar at both the top and bottom. I'm trying to avoid any bottom bars. I like the simplicity of the Speer pipe stand design, I'm just trying to come up with something like that for wood (it's cheaper than pipe, and I like the look of wood more too). I'm also thinking of using it both indoors and out- maybe...
Just to see if I understand, you're saying the diagonal on the top bar may not be necessary, but a diagonal stabilizing the feet is important?
Here's the one I did inspired in part by Risk's stand (and then overbuilt).
Rock solid though it does have that dreaded lower crosspiece.
