    Pillows... Yay or Nay?

Just went for my first test hang sat night and found I was very indecisive about the pillow. At first I decided I didn't need it but since it was already in the hammock and just in the way when I put it anywhere but under my head I just gave in and used it (as I was too lazy to get back out and put it away).

So with my first 8 day solo coming up next week, I find myself wondering if I should even bother bringing it. I'd love to save some pack space! I might even just bring an empty stuff sack and stick a shirt or sweater in that to use as a pillow.

How about all of you? Do you use a pillow? Tried searching and found a few DIY pillows, so obviously some do, but was curious as to if there were any that DONT use a pillow.

IMO you have to use a pillow in the hammock. If I don't, then I get a very stiff neck. If I use the pillow, then it is a very blissful sleep and I feel great when I wake up. YMMV.

I find that the hammock holds my head fine, but I like having something just under the nape of my neck that gives me something to rest my cheek on -- like a travel pillow. Since I don't like to carry extra junk when backpacking, I usually do what others have said: use extra clothing, rolled or wadded up.

I just returned from a week-long backpacking trip where I got more than my usual overnight experience. The first night, I used the makeshift pillow. Strangely enough, after a few days, I didn't use the pillow system at all. Not sure if it was just the exhaustion of the day's hiking or what, but I found that I didn't use or need the pillow much afterwards.

    YMMV.

Seems I'm a pillow person. I tend to wake up with the aforementioned stiff neck otherwise.

I'm with dejoha. I like something rolled up under my neck... My wife has one of the neck roll gizmos you use in a car or airplane and I find that works really well.

I feel the same way. even with the perfect setup I feel I need a pillow. but I mean pillows dont have to weigh much at all. you could have a nice down one from hammock gear. or a synth one from AHE.

Ditto - I don't find a pillow helpful. In fact, quite the opposite.

I've never really needed one. Can definetely do without. I have one from Arrowhead thats ok for laying a cheek on, but I have enough crap to carry around, so I usually leave it.
