    Sewing Machine

First off, let me say I know absolutely nothing about sewing. That being said, I was looking at the ebay deals today and they this one:

Would this work for most DIY hammock/camping projects?

Personally.. I think it looks like a "toy" machine. I would avoid it. YMMV
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Check my "Guidelines" post in my sig. Some folks have found it helpful.

    sewing machines

I was given a singer machine, aka 1970's which broke immediately, bad gear on it, but the box of attachments and the big swiss army knife in the box turned out okay. My neighbor gave me a clone 15, 1960 singer look alike that never really worked... again I learned from it. Now I have spent $89 for a singer basic machine with 23 stitches, and no problems with the thick stuff. Ebay and craigs list were people passing off overpriced or broken stuff in my area.

I know very little about such things, and would certainly defer to Rev and his expertise. For what it's worth, I got a Brother XL2600I for about $80 a couple months ago, and have had no issues with sewing most things gear-related (at least not due to the machine )

If you're gonna be using your machine for a long while and a lot of projects, I'd prolly go with something a little nicer. BUT, for what it's worth, that's the exact machine I used to make my hammock.

I've got a model like Bulldog. I've had no issues with it. I'm sure there are nicer things out there and if you plan on really cranking out some stuff in the future, something bigger and better might be needed. But if you just want to easy into and see how you like it, go for it, seems like a good deal.

Although I have and use several models of modern singers, as well as some older 66-16's, I have found that I quickly ran out of options with the cheaper machines. For serious sewing, and durability, especially when sewing heavier outdoor materials, I recommend a good walking foot machine. Yes, they can be had used, but I would look into a new machine for the warranty and service. I have over $300 in cheap used machines, which is a third of the $900 commercial walking foot. Just my .02 cents.
An emergency of my own making...is still an emergency.
