Ill bet that if REI can get the hammocks out and on display like the tents, more people would be interested. Not to mention if the staff knows enough about the hammocks to explain how to use them properly, people will at least be more willing to try them out. A friend of mine who lives back at home is thinking about getting into hammock camping and really only had me to ask questions with. Hes pretty much sold on the idea but I think some hands on stuff would get him. So +1 on going at REI.
Here are a few for you. One with my dog (just to show our 4 legged friends love it too) and some from the group outing with my friends. The one picture has three different kinds of hammocks, ENO single nest, DIY and a surplus netted. Also included a close up of my underquilt, an important part of a total hammock package.
