    Apples to apples-Comparing UQ

When you all, and UQ makers, are posting your temperatures of your UQ, what is the rough standard TQ used, I am comparing UQs to purchase. I am considering something like the Hudson River or Phoenix 3S or maybe even the Mt Washington Convertible. I am usually a cold-sleeper, and don’t like to sleep in much more than under clothes, maybe long johns if I must, so I am leaning towards a full length, but the Phoenix looks yummy

I have spent three weeks straight in my WBBB 1.1. I am not a back sleeper, so it took a while to get used to sleeping in the hammock. Still not there yet though. I am a poor sleeper anyhow, usually 4-5 hours and never straight through even before hammocking. But I am enjoying the hang and think I am ready to purchase an UQ as the fall season is closing in. I just may have to bring this thing indoors for winter use.

Here's an online shared document that might help you with your comparisons...

Here's a spreadsheet some HFers have put together comparing the various attributes of different underquilts: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...0bFBqSEE&hl=en

It's not complete by any means, but it's a start. I need to add the stats for the AHE Flamethrower that I just bought from another HFer (my first "professionally made" UQ!)

    Good luck!

Thanks guys, similar to an older one I came across yesterday posted here, but many more UQ on these, must be all UQ made.

But what is used as a benchmark for a top quilt?

I am using an partially open sleeping bag as a TQ for now.

You're welcome. Speaking of which, is this spreadsheet closed? It's open to the public on the web, but "view only". I can't add to it like I used to. Are we not updating this anymore? I can't recall who set this up... .

It does look like it's view only now. I believe Mrprez is the owner, maybe you could PM him to see if he'd change access for you to edit it...?

Thanks, NCPatrick. Will do. Anyway, let's get back to PATripper's post about underquilts and top quilts... . Didn't mean to highjack!

That's fine Pipsissewa, things need to be ironed out. Another question, why do some of you use a full length in the shoulder months and a 2/3 in the winter (Shug)? Not counting the insulating qualities, just why shorter? Mostly weight factor?

    Thanks all

There isn't a standard TQ reference nor is there a standard "sleeping clothing layers".

When I had to make this same decision, I looked at a few items:

    - vendor reputation of this site as a "first cut"; that wasn't very helpful since every vendor here was a loyal following

    - then it came down to cost, loft [thickness], construction, down fill rating, weight

    - I ignored the vendor temp ratings since there is no standardization, each vendor has there own idea of how to determine a rating and, as far as I know, none of them are professional tested to the EN Euro standard.

    - instead I looked at how much loft I needed at certain temps, based on my experience with sleeping bags

i.e. based on the layers I wear to bed, I need xx inches at xx deg F

    - I eliminated differental cuts because I wanted to be able to use the quilt as a TQ or a UQ

That is a great solution for a TQ.

I wouldn't buy a TQ unless the sleeping bag was a big weight penalty AND I had money burning a hole in my pocket.

I use my sleeping bag in my hammock in the winter.
    Love my JRB BMB
