I had no idea the 30 degrees was for minimum applied weigh on the suspension system.

I always thought it was the required angle to get the proper sag for flattest lay in a gathered end hammock.

One never stops learning on HF :-)

ironically, its also roughly where the most comfortable lay is for most. its the magic number!

The 30° angle does not apply minimum weight. However, it applies the least weight while still being practical. So your trees don't have to be so far apart. Also, it is a Very comfortable hang angle.

I never think of hanging in math or degrees.....after a while you just kinda know what works in the woods. Maybe a tweak or two and all is good in the trees for me. Roughly head or neck high for the most part.

I feel like I've just met a celebrity!

Main reason I wanted to know is because I'm making a single line suspension system using amsteel as described in other posts. They mention to place the marine butterfly knots at certain points so the hammock hangs at 30 degrees, just didn't explain why. I guess for this sort of hang it's going to be fairly important to get as close to 30 as possible, seeing as I'm hanging between trees 25 feet apart using string!

It's because below 30 degrees, you freeze your #*&!% off.

    Oops, wrong degrees! My bad.

If this is all true about the 30 degrees, why then in the Hennessey videos do they pull the suspension tight. Is it something to do with the way those hammocks are made?

Nope, that's why there's two marine butterfly knots on the suspension...have a read of the post by crackedup.

got to agree, i hung outside a shelter and somebody said "that guys hammock and tarp are hung all wrong" they said "well tell him in the morn cause hes out for the nite" i was gone at 6 am and heard about this in town 2 days later. i slept like a baby, so to each his own.
