    why did this tear?

Newbie here. I made a 10 foot hammock the other day. I used 1.9 ripstop. A Rolled type whipping. I really cranked down tight on the whipping. I noticed a one inch rip right below (towards the center) the whipping. I can fix it , but why did it rip? Im guessing I point loaded one section of the ripstop. Would it be better to not tighten the whipping so tight? Any pointers? Thanks

Id like to figure this out before I start making my next hammock.

I'm not sure what a rolled whipping is, but the tightness may have had something to do with it. That's why I like the sheet bend. You can only get it so tight before you load it the first time, and that first loading gets things all settled evenly. At least that's what I tell myself as it creaks and sags that first time..... They always hold though, and I inspect afterwards to make sure it's all kosher.
Pictures would help. I imagine you'd have to really be hopping in on one knee to rip 1.9, but I don't know the PSI breaking strength.

You didn't put the heel of your boot in it, did you? I'm really surprised to hear 1.9 oz. nylon ripped the first time you sat in it! There's definitely something wrong with that set up! Good luck! Wish I could help you more!

You must have cut the fabric when you cut your whipping ends. ripstop wouldnt rip like that just from sitting in it.

It wasn't cut. Ill try to attach a photo. It looks like I got a fold caught in my whipping or larkshead and it made this section extra loaded.

Hmm, yeah. Looks like you're right. Just enough to tear. That's unfortunate. Glad you caught it before it dumped you.

Did you happen to feel a noticeable ridge running down the hammock at first - like all the weight was being supported by a thin line of ripstop in the hammock? If an uneven localized force caused the tear, I would think it would be very prominent, but not sure.

Also as the rip line is running parallel to the hammock, it would seem that that would be caused by a stretch across the hammock instead of down the length of the hammock.

Looks like a quick cross stitch and a burn of the fray should fix that. 1.9 is really strong stuff.
Hang it high and God Bless!!

From the picture it looks like you have the black cord going thru the middle of the whipping. If you are using the black cord to attach your suspension and have a knot on the inside of hammock to keep it from sliding out of the whipping that would cause the tear. There would have bee a lot of pressure on the fabric at the end of the whipping and the knot would have pushed through the fabric.

If that is not the way it is setup then forget all that
