VIDEO: Minister Creek, Allegheny Nat'l Forest

Upon the recommendation of some fellow HF'ers we threw together a last minute trip to Minister Creek a few weeks ago. I was driving from MI and John and Trixie from Long Island, the A.N.F. is as about as half way as you can get. Johns a long time hammock camper but not a forum member and it was Trixie's second hike ever! She did really well.

    Good luck,

i always enjoy watching your videos. where did trixie sleep at night, was she just loose under the tarp? she looked like a pretty calm dog but i was curious to know if you had any night time visitors that interested her to get up. did she have something to sleep on, she had that nice white fur.

i've got a german shepherd that would camp with me in a tent but i haven't taken her with just using a hex tarp. i might try with a tarp that has doors.

can you go off trail there and follow the normal guidelines of 100ft from trail and 200ft from water?

Thanks bloomgorge. Trixie just slept on the ground at night, she was tethered to a tree, but we had no visitors and she didn't seem to be too interested in leaving the site. She seemed to prefer hanging out at my tarp b/c I put it down to the ground on one side so it prolly felt a little more like actual shelter to her. She was an absolute magnate for duff and leaves etc, but a good shake and most of it would come right off.
You can def. go off trail there and the normal guidelines are probably recommended (tho' I didn't actually see them) but there are so many "established" sites 10' from the river you'd do more damage by making a proper site. Anywhere the hemlocks grew it was nice and open underneath so pretty easy to make little impact. Plus it was 100°F or nearly so, so one didn't want to be too far from the river.
    Thanks for watching.
    Good luck,

Very nice. I was just there a month ago or so. Definetely one of the gems of the ANF. If you hike up to Triple Forks you will connect with The North Country Trail. Not the quickest way back to MI but it would get you there. Again, nice video.

Yeah, we hiked up to the NCT but I had to be back to work so we turned around and went back to the creek.

I was definitely starting to wilt a bit thats for sure. That heat may also explain our lackadaisical hiking efforts.

That creek is the greatest for sleeping next to. Had a nice waist deep pool at the second site to climb in and cool off. Highly recommend that area if you get a chance to check it out.
