Strongest winds you've survived in a storm in your hammock?

Hi, I live on the eastern coast of Australia, that's susceptible to a lot of strong winds and storms. We are coming up to spring which is a windy period. Often getting in access of 30 to 40 knots of winds along our coast. I like camping on the dunes along our coastline.

Curious as to what conditions, in particular my Warbonnet Superfly can sustain before damage.

Purchased the tarp ridge line and tarp guy lines with the stretchers from whoopieslings.com. I setup for the first time a couple days ago, it was windy with wind gusts to about 25 knots. Tried to pitch the tarp as tight as I could using the tarp ridge line with the prussic knots, the knots are slipping, as I try to tighten the tarp down, enough to stop it flapping in the wind.

On a sandy beach, 60-70 mph. It was a little worrying under my DD 3x3 tarp.

I've seen a superfly handle a 60 mph squally storm without a problem and i've weathered 2 other 70mph's without breakages. I'd be lying if I said they were peaceful nights though!

Whatever your under, I'd say over 70mph is pushing things being tied to trees

I don't know much about high winds, but that afternoon thunderstorm that seems to arrive daily here in Florida this time of year has made me rush to get my hammock up so that I could crawl inside and wait out the worst of it more than once.

Only time I ever tent camped in a storm was when I was little and it was an old canvass tent that leaked. I don't know that it's a fair comparison to make, since I know tents are better designed these days.

    I'd choose a hammock.

I've had it bad a few times but I've no idea how strong the winds were.

I got woken up about 2 a.m once as my trees swayed in opposite directions and I got bounced in my hammock. It's was quite good fun for half an hour until I dozed back off again.

I've been in an old pine plantation once when the storm came in, it was around 11pm when we went to bed and then five minutes later we were getting back up again. At least two trees had come down very close, we rammed all our gear into our packs in no order and got the hell out of there. We were dodging bins and debris in the streets as we drove home that night.

At 74 mph wind speed, that is called a category 1 hurricane.

Check out my thread on "Hangin' in 70mph wind".

Just go for it, have some fun and say,"Whoohoo what a ride!" (you probably won't get alot of sleep though.)

In Wichita, KS we just called that Wednesday.

I got back from a week at Oshkosh and had one very windy storm front come through. It damaged several ultralights and didn't do the full size planes any good either BUT they were all staked down well. There was one plane with some damage I believe but that's because it had a tent tied to it upwind of where the storm came in. Back at the campgrounds we had plenty of knocked over tents and there were several awnings on RV's that were out when the storm came through but I got up to my SuperFly/ WBBB tied to my Texsport Hammock stand and everything was fine just like the storm had never happened. 50 mph gusts I think, it was pretty fierce. I figured I had gotten off lucky for not storing my tent and fly during the day and put everything up for the rest of the day. I believe the setup of the fly with the pullouts down just had the wind going up and over my setup. I even had the doors pulled down the right way. Heck, I bet with my weight in the bag it wouldn't have even swayed. Then again, on the hammock stand you're not talking being up in the air. There's only a couple to 6 inches of clearance between the hammock and the ground, lower then if you were hanging from the trees. Probably optimal for just this kind of storm.
