What's so structural about a SRL?

I was hanging in a new spot yesterday, looking at my structural ridge line and suspension, guessing at the angle--which seemed perfect. It occurred to me that, if I removed the structural ridge line at that point, absolutely nothing would change. The suspension came right down from the trees in a straight line that continued straight to the center of the hammock.

So, my question is, in a perfect world, is a structural ridge line just a measuring device?

In an absolutely perfect set up with no strech at all...then I would say yes. The RL would do nothing.

Au contraire! It's a place to hang stuff, much like that exercise machine you keep promising to use regularly.

One thing I have found when I use my SRL is that if I do have to flatten the angles on my suspension to spread a further distance, the hammock keeps the same slack that it would when you set up at the perfect 30 degree angle.

It also keeps the net off your face.
I think where the S comes in is when the tree distance and suspension angle is not perfect and the RL is attached in the proper spots and strong enough to keep the hammock at the proper sag when you climb in.

The SRL just lets you get a consistent sag over a range of hang angles. By no means is an SRL a must have item but it is convenient.

I like to use a pretty strong SRL so it will hold up if I have to span a large gap between trees with a low angle.

I usually hang so the SRL is under a fair amount of tension. It's also where I hang the front balance pockets of my Aarn pack (ready-made ridgeline organizers).

Old Gringo, I'd like to see you hang your exercise machine from a ridgeline!

i have yet to get out there and put one up between two trees. It's usually between two jeeps that can be moved into the perfect width for my "knotty's gathered end hammock." Trying it out on the 3rd of september! GREAT QUESTION!
