    nacrabiner vs soft shackle

    Hi friends,
I have recently got a little bit of amsteel to play with and have made a soft shackle (which was not very easy for me on the first try. not tapering the end that i was burying made it very tough. once i did that it seemed to go pretty smoothly.

i'm wondering what exactly is the difference b/t the soft shackle and the nacrabiner. other than the way the fixed eye is made anyway. do they serve different purposes? are they rated differently, as far as load is concerned?

    thanks

I thought they're just different names for the same thing. Nacrabiner is a term found only here on the forum, having been named after the member who brought the concept to our attention from the sailing world.

soft shackle.. i think of opies bury and eye.

nacrabiner.. i think of a diamond knot, that locks with a standing larks head.

i prefer the nacrabiner in this instance. never had real luck milking a soft shackle to make it worthwhile. i use a nacrabiner on my wbbb ridgeline, so i can detach it and use it as a chair more comfortably.

(no ridgeline on a wbbb makes it a dreamy hmmk to chill out in)

They are two paths to the same spot.......theyre the same thing.

I think it was Opie who did some tests and found that the soft shackle failed in the knot. The nacrabiner would be the same thing I guess considering they lock down the same way on the damond knot ( I might have gotten the two mixed up it was a while ago when I read it) so the method on which it chokes down on the knot is not cause for worry more of the knot itself....oh and everything knotty said.

They are slightly different. A nacrabiner is a straight bury tied off with a double overhand or diamond stopper knot. A soft shackle uses one pass through the standing line and a diamond stopper knot...

I like to make a combination of the two. Soft shackle design with the Nacrobiner opening. I don't need a release leash that way, and you don't have to milk the bury to close the shackle. YMMV.

Thanks for the photos. It is sometimes overwhelming to search for things with decent photos.
