I tried a similar method TiredFeet and it just pulled right apart with a little tug. I just thought a nice chainlink would look cleaner than a knot(at least to me...I love clean lines).

Ive seen some REALLY long pony tail thingies and some more medium sized ones (6'' loop) I think Ill use it with some s biners for my tarp ridgline setup. Just got a nice bonus so Im splurging on an OES sil tarp. Thought the bands would help fight the sag when it gets wet....and it will here in South Florida. I also thought about using the longer ones in conjunction with some line loks for the corner tieouts to help with sag at those points aswell.

Thanks again for all the info guys. love this site!

I have used a 550 cord sheath and put the shock cord inside and sewn it together on the sewing machine, it was strong and used it for a underquilt that needed to slide down the channels.

put a 1" piece of 550 in between the shock cord and sew it all up...should work.
Hang it high and God Bless!!

I just did up a bunch of shock cord loops for my tarps and I used an old fashion square knot. I did melt the ends of the cord to keep them from fraying
