Since we're talking about Tyvek, here, ounces may not be important, but paint will add weight.

What OG said... here's a vid where the poster used Krylon camo paints to do up his tyvek tarp...

Looks like that paint holds pretty well.. I wonder how long he let it cure/If he washed the tyvek before he painted. Overall looks like a great setup.

    Well.... Here ya go.

The paint did hold up well under the hose test.
The fumes finally dissipated after hanging out under my deck for a week or so.
I have notices that after setup and tear down a few times, the paint seems to chip off where the tyvek is creased.

I have a car-camping trip planned soon and will post that in the trip planing area for anyone in driving distance to Springer Mountain....

I will show more video of the tarp actually in the field.

In retrospec, i may not go with the paint... put I am still on the fence. I have about 50 75 feet left on a 9' roll of tyvek so I can make another tarp...

Working on a design now using ten feet of the foll thatI can also make a "Grizz Beak" for the tarp in really windy conditions.

Once I have done that and decided if this is for me, I will likely pony up for a nice sil or cuben tarp or two that suit conditions at places I'm likely to go.

The tyvek I will keep for backup or more likely re-use for other purposes at that point. This is the reason I chose 1443R, costs are about the same either way for me.

Bear in mind that I live in the driest state in the driest continent on the planet. Heavy rain is not something easily found around here so I do expect to get some use out of the 1443R tarp regardless.

There is a local (Sydney) outdoor gear company making tarps from 1443R - Terrarosagear, and they say this about tyvek:

I don't think any of the tyveks are considered waterproof, but housewrap is better than 1443R.

    Thanks for the shoutout photohiker.

Sorry im late to the party here.

I have been using 1443r for a long while now and if used correctly is totaly functional water proof for tarps.

I prefer the weight aspects of the 1443r as opposed to the regular house wrap.

For the Desert it would be very good as well as its has a pretty good UV resistance. Mind you everything melts here in Australia

Aardvark- Mate thats a nice looking tarp you came up with there!

Just received a roll of approx. 50 feet of the house wrap Tyvek for free!

Let's see what I can make. Gonna mainly use it as a mockup for other projects but a tarp may see some limited use.

    Hi HitchHiking

Can you elaborate a bit on how to use 1443r correctly to ensure functional waterproofness?

    Thanks!

Its all in the set-up, plain and simple.

A good taught pitch will keep the water off.
in heavy longer rain spells pitch with steeper sides so no warter can pool and there should be no problems.

Can someone briefly explain the different types/models of tyvek being used by hangers?
