    new HG temp ratings

I noticed on the website that the temp ratings have been updated. The summer burrow and incubator, for example, are now rated at 40F instead of 35F. The down fill weight seems to be unchanged. I have read that their ratings were pretty true (before they were updated). Any idea why?

I just received my summer incubator and am hoping it can tske me down to freezing. I am a warm sleeper.

The summer rating have always for 40F but with the 900 fill, which all his quilts are made with, bring it down 5 degrees. So the rating should be 35F.

    Hi Shlabbo,

Yep, we are in the process of updating a few things on the site.

Regarding name changes. We decided that tagging a seasonal name with our products was a little confusing. Who is to say what "summer", "3-season", or "winter" truly means. So, the quilts are now named with the temperature rating they are built for. We hope it is a welcomed transition.

Regarding the 40° line of quilts. We were up in the air on this one. I am confident that we could have stuck with the 35° rating. I have never had anyone say that any of them have failed at that temperature. Most people report comfort at lower temps, and I myself have gone into the upper 20's with the summer line (I too am a warm sleeper though). Anyway....I really like to stay conservative when rating our gear so, for now, I am sticking with the 40° name. The rating was conservative when they were made with 800 goose down...now I suppose it is even more so. Like I said, it is not in stone so we may just drop it down to 35....

You may be just fine taking it down to freezing. A couple of things. Since you will be flirting with the edge of the temp rating, try to make an effort when considering site selection. Out of the wind, stay our of really low areas where cold air might collect, those sorts of things . Also, make sure you have had time to play with your gear a little before you go. Setup is pretty straightforward for just about all of the hammocks out there but it is always best to try your gear out in a controlled environment before heading out into field. Thanks!

I'm truly not certain whether I am a warm, cold or average sleeper. It seems to change often. But along with site selection, other things to consider are hydration and metabolism. Eat or drink a nice cup of hot cocoa before bed and I swear you'll stay warmer, haha. Also clothes can make all the difference. I've taken items down to temps that were questionable, but with every piece of clothing I have got on I can increase the rating of the quilt 5 degrees or so.
