    Which fabrics

    Hi!

    So, I start my journey here in the DIY section I've been thinking some about how and what when it comes to hammocks and tarps. So I've been looking around and have come to a decision about the tarp fabric, but I'm still far from sure about the hammock material.

    The fabric I've chosen for the tarp is this one: http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/R...ice::1195.html

    I think it fit my need rather good. It's quite lightweight, pretty good ripstop and 2000 mm water resistant. All at a nice price.

    But the second one, the one for the hammock I'm not so sure. I'm thinking about this one: http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/N...sqm::1430.html

    I don't think I will need a waterproof hammock, but some water resistance is always good. And the weight should of course be at a minimum. And it's breathable.

    Does anyone have a comment or two about my choices? Of course I'll need lines, mosquito net and zippers before I'm done, but I'm not quite there yet

    Thanks!

    The tarp fabric is just what you want

    however the hammock fabric is PU coated....I would doubt its breathable..... also PU coating increases weight more than silicon...... I think...... if I were you I would get a fabric without any coating

    like plain nylon..

    like ripstop

    or supplex.... I hear this makes a very soft hammock.... but I do not have any personal experience

    Woah! That store has aluminum coated ripstop! That would be very nice for a winter tarp that you wanted a reflective coating!

    I am using the same silnylon for my tarps, have a friend who has also sewn a tent out of this material (yes, a groundsleeper).
    For the hammock I wouldn't use PU coated fabrics, but that's just me -- don't think it will provide a comfortable feeling. I've already made 2 hammocks out of bwdd's calendared ripstop 2nds + 1 quilt finished and another one in the pipe. It's worth ordering some additional length for future projects...

    Woohoo, haven't seen that yet even though I am a returning customer now and then. You should probably get in contact with Martin (owner) first before ordering to ask if it is waterproof enough for a winter tarp. The description only says that it is windproof and the aluminium has been evaporated not glued...

    ...And, maybe even better for summer with the shiny side up!

    Hi guys!

    Thanks for the replys! I have given this hammock fabric some thoughts and came to the same conclusion as you have done.

    So at this point I'll probably give it a go with the following:
    Tarp: 3x3m, 50g silnylon (http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/R...ice::1195.html)
    Hammock: 3x1,5m, 90g silnylon (http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/N...oice::471.html)
    Mosquito net: 3x3m, 17g 140 holes/cm2 (http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/M...ght::1565.html)
    Lines: 5mm polyester (http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/D...red::1483.html)

    This set up is weighing in at 1008 g (35,56 oz). Lines and poles excluded...

    When it comes to lines I don't really know how much to use so I will have keep investigating that.

    This is so much fun

    Don't go with silnylon for your hammock. You need it to be breathable. Also, that material appears to be equivalent to 1.9 ripstop. You'll surely only need a single layer of that weight material.

    Hm, Good point... How about this one: http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/R...-sqm::463.html
    I have no idea how good the rip stop.is, but that could of course be a question for the shop... And that would actually make the hammock lighter ;-)

    I think I would start with a 3x4 M tarp. You will lose some in sewing. The extra length along the ridge line will provide better rain protection. If you want to reduce weight you can do a hexagonal cut but I would leave it square and put tie points in that let you fold in the ends in bad weather.
