First Night Out--'John Rock' Pisgah National Forest

First of all, thank you to everyone that recommended this location (and the other locations as well). This was only an overnighter but it was a good time nonetheless.

I was flying solo and stayed at the top. The campsite is about 100 yards away from the rock access area and right off the trail so it was rather convenient. (If you head up clockwise, it is past the access. And, the opposite if you come up counter-clockwise! )

Here is a link to a bunch of photos that I took. This link will open up another window in your browser.

    Do enjoy! And, thanks again.

Nice photos! I could be wrong but I don't think those are Peregrine Falcons though. I think they be Turkey Vultures.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

You could be right. They could be chickens for all I know! I thought perhaps that they were Peregrines as I thought I read something about them in the ranger station nearby.

Either way, it was a good time watching them.

And, thanks for the nice comments, gang!

    Excellent report and pictures.

I'm planning to hang over Labor Day, and this is at the top of my list of places to visit. Do you mind telling me how far it was from where you parked to the summit, and how far in the good places to camp where? Is there water available along the trail or at the potential camp sites?

Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

    No problem...

If I am not mistaken, the entire loop is about 5 miles so it isn't too bad. I kinda took my time and just soaked it all in as this was the first time I was there and I was in no hurry at all. I left the parking lot around 3:30 or so. There is a lot of water on the bottom as the trail runs right by the Davidson River. I did not come across any once I made the turn to go up to the summit. There might be some, but I didn't see it and wouldn't count on it if I were to go again.

So, if you are going stay down below, there are plenty of water options and plenty of places to hang. Once you head up, minimal water and lots of over growth. The place I stayed was perfect for at least 3 hammocks and there were several other obvious places a few hundred yards further along as well.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

    Have fun!!

Great job. I loved the pictures. The Brevard area is one of my very favorites.
That water at Sliding Rock is really cold.
