I've gone comfortably into the 20's with my 3S Crowsnest (Phoenix), a small foot pad, and an old Camp5 down bag converted to a TQ. I've now got a 3S Burrow and I know it'll beat that old Camp5 converstion. Much better loft and coverage. I'm guessing you had air leakage on the UQ.
UQ's have a learning curve for sure ... but once you get it figured out ... they're great ... and Adam n Jenny makes some of the best IMHO.

What do you wear when you sleep in those cool temps?

Even those wouldn't help you for underneath insulation.

The incubator 3S normally would be sufficient for those temps, but if the ends were not snugged up properly, you could have been losing precious warmth from the ends.

In any event, trying things out is how you learn.

Maybe I'll try another sleep out tomorrow. I'm on a work road trip but brought my camping gear along in case I get the urge/opportunity. Maybe on my way home tomorrow I'll find a nice place to hang and experiment some more.

Wind chill still holds for hammocks, even more so as you are dangling in the breeze. Dropping that tarp down would make a big difference. I deal with cold and damp a lot and it can really make you feel colder.

Adding long johns, long sleeve top, socks, beanie cap, and even light liner-style gloves can bring lighter insulation into a lower range. Many ultralight hikers sleep in everything needed to make the best use of clothing and insulation weight.

Depends ... down that low usually my thick wool socks, good synthetic long johns and my Black Rock cap. That usually works for me.

That's likely a huge part of what I did wrong. Shorts, short socks, no toque (stocking cap.. I speak Canadian lol). I was much better after dressing up. If I sleep out tomorrow I'll dress better and hang my tarp in a better position to block the wind if there is any.

Who has taken the place of someone who was a first- time UQ owner, and let her see whether and where there are gaps?

I suspect there are more gaps, sides and ends, then there would be if the simple forms of these had draft tubes.

Yes, yes, if you set the hammock up right, and if you set the UQ up right, then draft tubes aren't necessary.

Well, I'll bet the mature versions of these will include them, at least for one end, maybe removable: simple tubes to especialy fill the creases .

Or does one of the specialists already sell them, or include them in their design?

+1 on air leakage and/or sagging.

Make sure the head and foot end are cinched so there are no gaps.

Then, reach under your hammock while you are in it and feel between your hammock and UQ. There should be no space there whatsoever.

I actually threw 2 prussiks on the side shock cord of the UQ that I place on the hammock whipping so I can truly adjust how tight the UQ is strung under the hammock.
