    thinking about making a double

So I'm thinking about making a double layer hammock. I haven't seen one before, but I've already made a single and I don't think the double will be that difficult. I think I'm going to use the offset design where opposite ends on each side are left open to slide a pad in. Are there other designs that may work better? Anything that I need to watch out for when making a double layer hammock?

    I'm interested also.

After making my first hammock, I'm also thinking of making a double so that I can use the foam pad with its versatility and usefulness for a long distance thru hike rather than the expense of a down quilt. Will be watching this thread for what people add.

That's what I did. I left about a two foot opening on each side so I could reach in and arrange the pad. I hemmed one end and then pinned out the sides. Once the sides were pinned and I was sure nothing went cockeyed, I sewed the sides and then hemmed the other end, then turned them and sewed the channels. Straight up easy.

    What material did you use?

Were your materials of the size weight, like 1.7 or did you use two different weight materials like 1.1 and 1.7. I was thinking of doing a 1.1 and a 1.9 at the heaviest since I'm not really into exteme weight reduction and am bigger than some hammock users....Also, being a double , does this help with keeping the mosquitos from biting through?

They were the same. The first one was one long piece that I folded over. The second one was going to be a single, but I decided to go with a double so it was two separate pieces of the same material.

Using two different weights is an interesting concept. What's your thoughts behind it?

I have been thinking of making two, independent but equally sized hammocks and then just joining them together with cord looped through the ends at the gather.

One thing this gives me is, in a pinch, two hammocks. However, I don't know if they would actually stay aligned with just he ends gathered.

    Any thoughts on this?

It has the potential to be fiddlely, but if you make sure that you have both edges aligned along the side before you get it, it might work. And if it doesn't, it won't take much to sew them together.

I just took one apart. Started with ~25 ft and folded it in half. Did the gather and fold the end trick with a pair of whoopees. The edges keep wandering. It looks like sewing the edges together in the mid section stabilizes the two layers. Leaving most of the length unsewn lessens the fiddle factor as small differences can sort themselves out.

If you're going to put a pad in between, make sure the openings you leave are bigger than you think you need. Mine are prolly 2' or more and its a PITA to adjust the pad. If I did it again I'd only sew the two layers together for about 12" in the middle.
    Good luck,
