    HH Under Quilt/First Project Report

This was/is my first major project, an under quilt for my HH Expedition. I took an old sleeping bag and cut it kinda following the dimensions in the KAQ project here http://www.hammockforums.net/index.php?page=kaq . The bag was shorter, by 21 inches, which was okay cause its not going to be for extreme cold any way so ¾ length would be plenty. I went 15” on each side also, roughly, which seems to be too much, a bunch of sag in the middle.

You can barely see the out line...

    Cut out...

Corner and edge detail, I did most the edges in grosgrain cause I need the material for the cord channels....

    Completed with out the cords

    Hanging empty

    With wife in it...

    Head end empty

    Classic Machine....

As you can see there is lots of sag... about 8" to a foot maybe when in it, it looks good on the ends, Do you think I should go pin up some material and then cut a strip, big dart out of the middle, to take up the slack???

I think I'd be more likely to cut one side of it off instead of the middle. If you cut a strip out of the center, it's gonna be hard to not have a cold spot.

I was pretty free with the drawing the out line, that and the extra inches on the one side really made it too big. I've safety pinned it closes to what the original would be and rehung it, and it was much better.

So I believe I'll draw it to scale on graph paper and really see how much extra I ended up with, compare it to what I've pinned and then cut some out.

I don't think cold spot will be an issue, because I'll have to sew it back together, and there will be a small overlap, plus I want to make sure th part I cut out is inside the dart.

    Finished

I ended up pinning it up to what should have been the correct dimension on the top, and cutting a big tapered section from primarily the right side. Used the nylon form the cut sections to redo the edges and sewed it back together.

It hangs much better now and I believe will work well. Hopefully l"ll get a chance to do a field test next week, maybe a couple night hike in Cheaha Wilderness if not I'll do a backyard test. It is hot in the day here but still has been down to the low 70 in my back yard...

I really can't wait until fall to really try it out, I'm ready to ditch the pad, and looking forward to making a topquilt...
