Day hike and water filter test

I snuck out this morning to do 4 mile hike and my oldest son tagged along ,, he said I need a baby sitter....

The walk went well, I had intenionly loaded up with gear and water, to see if I could hump it all....

And I got to play with my DIY water filter bag.. ( My version of the Sawyer filter and a bladder bag.)
The filter and bottle was $30.00 from Walmart and the bladder was $4.88 from Academy.

I had cut the tube and inserted the inline filter

Here is some water that I pre filtered through a paper coffee filter,, it is still nasty and murky.

This is that same water from the above picture , that was run through the gravity filter.

It will run 32 oz in under 2 minutes.

The weight of this rig is .54

So far so good,,, I haven't had to sit on the crapper yet this evening....

I saw some cows standing in a pond this morning, drinking, and all of the other things cows do where they drink. That would be the test.

Don't know if I could drink that water, even after filtering.

Like the gravity system you've set up. Good work!

Nice pics, Randy. I love gravity filter, probably because I'm basically lazy.

Glad to see you're getting out there more, Randy

Great job on the filter Randy. I did sonething very similar several months ago and it's working great. I really like the gravity filter system. A tip someone passed on to me -- put a ziplock bag in your filter kit to use in low water situations to fill your "dirty" bladder.

Be aware that the Sawyer filter in the Walmart drinking bottler IS NOT the same filter Sawyer guarantees for a million gallons. The Sawyer/Walmart filter is rated at only 500 gallons. It still filters to 0.10 microns however. I discovered this detail when I was researching filters and confirmed it with Sawyer directly. I decided to purchase the Sawyer SP122 3 way filter with the guarantee for about $45, which is the least expensive per gallon filter I know of.
