i usually am in porch mode, unless it's during a my extreme training type canoe trips where I paddle and portage as much as I can, then when I stop it's to go straight to sleep after some dinner. A view isn't necessary but the protection is as it's usually raining, thick fog, heavy dew or whatever to contend with, sometimes bears and moose!
If I am setup for days or weeks, I usually have a porch set up though, with a quick take down mode in the ready for the weather.
the two attached pics are two consecutive nights miles apart (an all day journey) that I had to deal with moose. In one pic next to the lake the campsite was in the middle of a sort of trail or game trail. The moose walked right up to my setup that was blocking it's trail and decided not to go thru it (and me) but head into the lake right where my rig was tied to next to the shore. Oh man did he make a racket, went across the lake and broke thru the thicket for awhile , all during some really deep fog. It sounded like it could have been a T Rex out there!
