    Short Hike: Black Mountain, NC

    Hey guys,

This is a belated report, but back in July, I was at a conference and had a three-hour break, so of course my first thought was "Go for a hike!".

I checked the map, and there was one five-miler, "High Windy", that seemed to be calling my name. So, I grabbed my knife and a bottle of water, and started going.

I should mention that this is one of my first solo hikes. Most of the time, I'm hiking or backpacking in a group, and I'm always the one who outpaces everyone a little bit and has to concentrate on slowing my pace. I was excited to have the chance to challenge myself and see what my true pace was.

This trail was a steep uphill trail, but fairly open and easy to follow, with 1400 feet of elevation in about 2.5 miles (and then back down). The ridge that I was hiking up to was actually the Eastern Continental Divide. To my surprise, I made it up in about an hour, and took a quick break looking out over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It was an even bigger surprise when I got down in less than half an hour. So, I figured that my true pace in rough terrain is close to 3 miles per hour if I throw some ups in with the downs.

It was an enjoyable hike with some great views, and it really gave me a chance to test my own limits.

    Happy Trails,

    Glad you got out there!
Good thing it was back in July. They are having bear problems & closing some of the trails & camp grounds now.
It was mentioned on another thread here.

That's quite a pace for those hills Glad I''m not hiking w/ you

It was at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. They're "High Windy" trail. It's just one of those that you walk up to the trailhead about .3mi from the hotel. Very convenient.

I'm not familiar w/ that one. Mostly those that connect w/ the State park. But it's always good to find a new trail to hike.

The YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly is set up a lot like a boy scout camp. It's on a large plot of land with a bunch of trails and climbing walls (there's even a challenge course).

I looked it up & see where you were now. I was thinking about the Mt Mitchel area, a little further north in the Black Mountain Range.
