Small bunkhouse designs for dual bunk/hammock use...?

It will probably never happen...but there is a possibility...each year, we pursue a few leads...

For the last handful of years, I've been incubating a plan to build a scuba "base" on my favorite island, just a short distance from Tokyo by boat, but a world away in atmosphere and lifestyle.

If we can find property reasonably (the most challenging step), my wife and I would build what at first would be a place for folks to camp or stay in cabins, utilizing our favorite dive center for tanks and fills (as usual). A grill would provide all the food needs. Now, we use small hotels called minshuku for stay and meals.

Background finished, now to the question. I'd like to make the place as hammock friendly as possible. Each year, I'd build a simple bunkhouse (or two) and I'm brainstorming designs that might allow bunk beds on the walls and hammock attachments points as well. These would be bare-bones bunk houses, to sleep around 6 people.

Any of the fold-down bunk designs I can think of would block the wall once they folded up or down (and hide any of the wall-mounted attachment hardware).

Has anyone seen or done anything that might be helpful in this pursuit?

I'm first! Why bunkbeds? Just hang hammocks, no problems.

Build permanent top platform bunks with substantial framing, and hang a hammock on the diagonal below. Bunks will be a little bit longer than normal, but that leaves a place to stash "stuff."

Geodesic dome, with center pole strong enough for up to 8 campers. Diameter 20 feet, allows enough length for most hammocks. At the wall end of each of the 8 hanging points, a small sitting bench.

Geodesic can be very energy efficient, and suprisingly inexpensive to build.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

many thanks for all the suggestions...
I've never built a geodesic dome...

OG, I like your idea...I wonder how far spaced I'd need bunk to be (top to bottom) to make this work...

Not sure...I keep threatening to build a cabin for four at deer camp, and that's the way I'm going. Sleeping platforms on top, and hammocks or cots on the bottom. I'm thinking ~ 50", so there will be sitting headroom under the bunk.

how much length would you need for the hammock.

Our hunting camp has bunks built out of lumber and plywood with a 4" foam mattress, not comfortable at all. The bunks are just over 6' (probably around 6'-3" or so) and i am about 5'-10". last year I was looking for a way to rig a hammock but i have a feeling it is going to be too short.

Maybe diagonally across the bunk would give just enough with DIY hammock made shorter.

+1 This would be a neat concept.
