    ...more bowline trivia:

It's a knife knot, meaning that it can bind under heavy load so that it cannot be untied.

An unusual attribute of a bowline is that it can fall apart underwater. If you use a bowline underwater in a manner that it will shake, alternatively tightening up and going slack, such as under a buoy, it will fail. The original use of a bowline, on the forward edge of a square sail when hard on the wind, is a similar situation, but out of the water. Lobstermen and longliners don't use bowlines.

Thanks everyone for the nice words and additional knot info. As usual MacEntyre is a wealth of nautical knowledge.

Thanks Knotty. I'm gonna have to practice the salty seadog way of tying (and pronouncing!) the bowline.

In the lark's head video, the knot you tied by running the loop though the biner twice to create more wraps is called the prusik knot. I rather suspect you know that, but had a small memory lapse when you were filming. I used to think that you could only tie a prusik by bringing the free ends through the loop twice, but accidentally stumbled on the way you showed...which is pretty handy to know.

Knew that the form was a prusik but wasn't sure if it was still called that when applied that way. It's definitely not a doubled larks head, which puts an additional wrap of line around the tails not the ring. Whatever it's called, it is, as you say, pretty handy.

    When Knotty Wasn't Knotty

I may be dating myself but back when I first met Knotty, he wasn't known as "Knotty". But the first thing he said after introducing himself was a compliment that I was using knots to hang and stake out my tarp. The name "Knotty" soon followed by one other than me.
