Hammock Pillow

I have almost completed a DIY project which I call a "shillow". Hope to finish tomorrow and will post pics and explanation.

I purchased a Therm-a-Rest Stuff Sack Pillow and tried it out stuffed with 2 pairs of shorts and 2 t-shirts. I haven't got to use it overnight (that will be the real test) but used it chilling in my WBBB 1.1 DL reading an issue of Backpacker Magazine for about 2 hours the other day.

It worked pretty well and I think it has a good shot of working for me on an overnight sleep.

I'll post again after I've had a chance to sleep on it for a whole night.

I tried no pillow but quickly realized I needed neck support in my WBBB. I have the red exped inflatable and quickly found that I needed it to be almost completely empty to get the neck support I needed without pushing my head forward. Packs up really small and is very soft to lay on. If you have a mummy bag it works great in the hood.

I think, ultimately I need a small fleece roll that I can roll up to a 1-2 inch roll and still have some flat under my head. Kind of like this: O_____

Down side about compressibility is that the more it compresses the worse it supports. That's why the stuff sack or inflatables work so well.

I spent a night out using the aforementioned stuff sack pillow. I really like it. I had a Sherpa PrimaLoft Puff Jacket inside it. Very comfy.

I had no problems with it moving around on me. It only cost me about 1 oz (1 oz extra for the soft inner lining). It is a cool multi-purpose item.

I'd recommend this to anyone considering it.

I picked up the Remington Camo Thermo Seat at Walmart (can't find link for it for some reason) for $3 this past week, and now I must retract my previous statement of having no use for a pillow. This thing turned my hammocking on its head. I thought I was comfortable before, now I see I just didn't realize I was suffering. (Kind of like all those poor slobs still sleeping on the ground.)

It is slightly larger than a average sized head, and compresses to less than half its shelf size. The weight is not gram weeny approved at nearly a pound. And while I'd like to have a softer feeling liner on atleast one side of it, for the price it's hard to beat.

I have the exped-air-pillow, but have not used it yet. Yard too wet so until it dries more or I build my stand, no hang! Buying wood on Saturday so by Monday, I should be hanging.

I love mine, but I recommend only a partial inflation. That allows your head to press the air down to your neck area, where it really works. Hope you like it.

I use the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow. If I'm laying on my back I use it for my head, and between my knees for side sleeping. All in all it's a great pillow!

I use a dry bag clipped around the hammock so it can't fall out (at least, not all the way to the ground). It's stuffed with spare clothes but they'll trap air too if needs be. It goes under my sleeping bag hood so no problems with having my face on silnylon - could always wrap my shemagh round it for comfort

I've taken to using my vest that stuffs into an inside pocket or a stuff sack filled with what ever soft stuff I have left.
