Cross Baffles make sense to me. It should keep the down form shifting all to the bottom. Anyone with a comment on if this is necessary or will overfilling take care of the problem. I have seen pictures on the forum of several quilts with the Baffles running long ways with the quilt to keep the down from all settling to the lowest areas. Any comments on which way to run the baffles is more efficient??

Just curious, How did you sew and stuff the center baffles to keep the down from shifting. Are these baffles sewn shut or is there still a gap for the down to possibly shift from one baffle to another?

We had many discussions in the DIY section in the past about doing something like this...the problem always was finding something with actual *down* in it and not a bag of feathers with *some* down in it.

It sounds like you did well finding those specific pillows. That's a steal of a deal if they are less than 10% feathers (hopefully less than 5%).

You'll know if you got good down by how many feathers poke through your material. If you constantly find feathers poking through the nylon, then it was an OK deal. If you find very few, that you rocked this one and I'm jealous! LOL

the sewing of the very center baffles was the most time consuming and trickiest, just had to go slow, the baffles have gaps in them that are about 2" apart in every direction, when i stuffed it i just left a spot open on the side in the middle and added the down from there and just pushed and patted it throughout the quilt to distribute it, worked fine

have only used the quilts for 4 nights so far, but haven't had any feathers poke through the nylon on any of them, when we were adding the down to the quilts we both were commenting on how there weren't any feathers in it and we were both concerned about that from some of discussion i had read on here, we actaully started to really look for feathers and the few tiny ones we did find (maybe a dozen or so) were so small i don't' think they will matter, they were maybe a half inch long

Do you know the type of Bloomingdale pillows that you had? The "My Flair" ones are said to have 600 Fill down.

hey just wanted to post a picture of the down clusters that came out of the pillows that we used, don't know if these are good or bad as far as down goes, these were just the first couple i grabbed too that were hanging on the edge of the pillow opening, so i didn't do any searching for any that looked good, but the whole pillow is just like this

maybe someone that knows more about this kind of stuff can comment on whether it looks good or not

    boot

edit : i noticed in my OP i said we got 54oz of down out the pillows, when i took the picture of the clusters i looked at the weights again and we actually got 64oz of down from the pillows

This worked well for me as well. I bought a huge pillow from Amazon with 850 fp down in it and it was all fluff. I still have half a pillow full still. I am considering doing a summer quilt.

What method did you use to stuff? The Vacuum method?
