If the hammock material feels like the material used in a stuff sack, I'd look for a heavier hammock. There are hammocks out there made of 210 cloth for example, that have done the AT 5 or more times. I just don't think a critical piece of gear is the best place to lose a few ounces.

Just out of curiousity, what were you wearing?

Some of my pants have zippered pockets that are fairly sharp. Check your back and side pockets for anything that may slice the fabric.

As for other sites info on hammocks, take the advise given here. Its what we do.
Stringing a hammock tightly between the trees stresses the fabric, suspension, and generally gives the hammock a terrible lay.

Let it sag for best results.

Sorry to hear your first hang wasn't a big success. Mine wasn't either. No equipment failures but I was very cold and my wife fell down an embankment. A deer crashed through our camp in the wee hours because I set up in the middle of a trail!!
Before I got cold, I slept like a baby. I can't wait to get back out in the woods. Don't give up.
The people here on HF are VERY friendly and helpful to us noobs and there is a lot of info here. Disregard everything you hear elsewhere about hammocks and get your info here. You won't regret it.
    BTW, welcome from West Virginia!!

My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

You can't ask for any more than that!
    Grand Trunk

On an unrelated note, since your first night out didn't have nearly enough drama...
Be careful hanging in state parks here in Florida. They strictly forbid anything, including tree straps and hammocks, being attached to trees. In reality, it depends on the guy coming up to your site. Sometimes they're cool and they're just making sure you're not being an knucklehead. Sometimes... well sometimes they're the one being the knucklehead.
On federal property - no problemo. Ocala Nat'l Forest, Canaveral Nat'l Seashore, et al, are all fine.

    Finally... WELCOME TO HF!!!

Seems like your question has been answered

One of my hammocks (ENO) has a slight imperfection in the weave of the fabric. I have used it cautiously for 10 or 12 afternoon sessions and it seems to be fine. Not ready to trust it overnight though. If I have a problem I will send it back and wonder why I hesitated.

    Good luck,
