Suspension Choices for HH

You might have had a defective tree hugger. The 30 degree hang is important to reduce stress on the suspension, but my tree huggers held my 270lbs with the stock ropes for over a year before I switched to whoopies and carabiners - and they weren't all 30 degree hangs, either. Some were pretty tight.

I think you are reading the amsteel comments and transferring to Spectra. Amsteel is a hollow braid so it flattens under the compression between the rings. Hennessy Spectra is a hard solid braid so much less inclined to deform significantly under compression.

I gathered that HH lightweight models use Spectra. I have used Amsteel in another hammock (Enos) to attach descender rings. The good news that I think you are saying is that unlike Spectra, Amsteel Will work with descender rings? I like the quick adjustment, no knot alternative but don't want go all the way to the hammock with webbing this time.

Thanks to those who corrected me on the suspension pitch. Sounds like that was my biggest mistake.

I want simplicity, so it looks like strap suspension connected with rings at the hammock or whoopie slings (jrb's setup looked nice).

The pro's and cons are simplicity vs. weight savings.

Are there other pro's and cons to straps vs. whoopie slings (or jrb's setup)?

Very surprised you sawed through your tree hugger.

I currently use my Hennessy with descender rings and the supplied spectra. It works but can be a bit of a pain when loosening or adjusting. Will be moving to whoopies for weight savings and simplicity.

That's it.. weight for the whoopie, ease of use for the straps.

Straps: Wrap the tree, biner the end to the strap, pull to adjust. Same on other end.

Whoopies: it's wrap the hugger round the tree, tie a marlinespike hitch. Hang the loop on the knot (On the knot, not on the toggle). Do the same on the other end. Go back to the first end and pick the whoopie off the ground because it fell off the knot. If you're lucky the pickup only happens once. Adjust whoopies. I think I should have bought the straps instead.

Really its just a matter of preference and weight savings. The straps run heavier than the whoopies. Both are very easy to use, although the whoopies can take some more tweaking until you get the hang of it.

Shumway: maybe your toggles are too short? I often have the loop pop off the knot while I do the other end, but never all the way to the ground.

It only falls off 1/3 of the time.. just having a little fun. I may cut some longer toggles though. Someone else showed a trick using a carabiner as a toggle. The whoopie goes through the carabiner so can't fall completely off, even if it does hop off the knot.

Shumway, use mini-biners instead of toggles and thread the whoopie loop through and unto the knot. I find it easier and never have to worry about whoopie falling off the toggle.
