I braided my tree straps out of three strands of 7/64 amsteel. Wove a loop into one end and wove kind of a sq knot into the other end (from 1886 book on knots). Use a marlin spike and keep it attached on the loose end. Makes about a 3/4" surface on the tree when under stress.

That is a good idea to use braided amsteel, I'm going to give it a try.

    strap got really scraped

I read as many of the forums as possible when I was making my first hammock and one thing I remember was to regularly look at your straps. Well after wrapping them around a brick chimney for one end of the hammock I later saw where they had really been scraped, so much that they could fail anytime. Replaced with better and bigger straps made from online forum store. You have to keep checking those straps.

It was polyester strap...not sure what it was rated at. Strange thing is a friend of mine has the same strap. He is 50 pounds heavier than me and hasnt had a problem. It was my first hang with it and plop. I went back to my much heavier stuff...no problem there.
Lack of preparation on your part does not constitue an emergency on mine.

Not sure who said it ...but I like it
