What does the tag say?

So today I am walking around Wal-Mart in the fabric department looking for some 1.9oz Rip stop Nylon for my first DIY Hammock. Well I can't find what I need so I ask, and the lady looks at me like I am CRAZY. She tells me I can’t get this fabric at Wal-Mart.

Now I know I'm not crazy so I look at every roll there just to make sure. Well I found some nylon but nothing that said 1.9oz. Should I be looking for a tag that say's 1.9oz or something else? I am willing to order on line but I'm not sure of the best (cheapest) place to get it.

The tag normally says "Fabric remnants of unknown origin and composition" or something similar, at least in the $1 bin. I have sometimes seen "100% nylon", but never any weight. You just have to get a feel for what is what.

For on-line orders, Ed Speers has supplies. If you are looking for more color choices, try Quest or OWF.

yep, there's little or nothing on the fabric bolt to help. & you'll be extremely lucky if you find someone working at walmart that knows what you're talking about.

Yeah I am very new to fabric... How do I get a feel for it if I'm not sure what I am looking at. I have a claytor and I am not sure what fabric it is made of but no fabric at the store seemed to even be close to the same. I'll check the Claytor site to see if it tells.

I think the best way to search Walmart is to order your first diy hammock on line. Walmart is really hit or miss and once you worked with what you know is the real stuff you get a better eye for it. I never plan to get walmart rip-stop I just hope I do. Actually all I ever see is 1.4 polyester. The only place I see 1.9 is places that are spacifically catering to backppackers, I don't think anybody else cares what a square yard weighs

I know it's not Wal Mart...but for those interested...Hancock Fabrics carries Rip Stop Nylon...I am not sure of the price per yard...but I was told that they carried it and have it in some Camo variations aswell. I plan on gettin by there some time in the next few weeks to see for myself...just hard to find time as of right now.

The Handcock fabrics I went to had ripstop but their camo was at least part cotton.

i believe ncpatrick has got some rip stop from Hancock Fabrics. i looked at what they had there one day but didn't buy any.
i think they had nylon rip stop but couldn't say for sure now.
seems like it was about $6 or $7 a yard.

You can get a variety of swatches from Quest Outfitters. They have groupings from $1 to $2.50, or you can request up to 3 individual fabric samples for free. The "C. 1.1 oz ripstop" in the "Gear" set is the silnylon (C standing for coated).

Once you can look at and feel the fabrics, it makes it much easier to figure out what's on the $1/yard bolts at Walmart.
