    Blue Ridge Parkway Labor Day

I took advantage of the fact that I had Labor Day off and headed for an overnight in the mountains.

My wife was going to a neighboring town to do some shopping, so we met there to have lunch. After lunch, I headed out.

Some great twisty pavement led me to the Blue Ridge Parkway and much cooler temperatures.

I stopped in at the Richland Balsam overlook. This is the highest point on the motorway at 6,053 feet.

I dropped down U.S. 276 to Cruso, N.C., where I set up camp at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground. I used my WBBB 1.7 dbl layer, my Winter Incubator UQ, my poncho liner TQ, and my Jacks R Better tarp.

I also hung my new-to-me WB Traveler for the first time -- and enjoyed a little snooze in it in the early evening before I ate supper.

That's the Pigeon River making its way toward Tennessee.

Someone had piled up some stones from the river, so I practiced my spellin'.

See how proud I am that I can spell my own name?

I hung out by the community fire with some other riders for a good bit of the evening, then turned in for the night.

I awoke the next morning to the rain that every forecast that I had looked at had assuered me was on its way.

The view from the hammock was nice.

After breakfast from the campground's kitchen, I finished my packing and headed out in the rain for a little riding on the parkway. Lots and lots of water was dropping from the heavens.

Back up at the Richland Balsam overlook, it was pouring rain. I had the place to myself.

I rode the parkway "south" toward Cherokee for a while, then turned around and headed back on the same twisty pavement that brought me there. It was a fun overnight. The rain riding was fun.

    Get out there and hang,
    Chris

    Miss that spot ...

I was up there about a month ago at dusk and watched the moon come up. Now, I am stuck behind a desk at work. I would much rather be there than here.

Nice trip! I'm a junior at western and we wear that parkway out all the time. I'm going to panthertown here soon to try out the new gear (Leighlo 20* UQ, Kelty Noah 12, and MSR Pocket rocket), but I just wanted to say that it's cool seeing people on here every day that are from this area. Happy hangin!

Thanks for the kind words, folks. It was a fun trip.

CW, it'll be good to see you, too. It's funny that that's where we'll likely next cross paths since I regularly pass within a half mile of Hacienda de CW. Less than a half hour ago, as a matter of fact.

It probably won't be long before Law Dawg comes along and admonishes me for not yet posting a trip report on my three-week trip this summer.
