I'm in the same boat and although I'm not using mine for winter, I'm looking to be able to go down to 20 degrees. I've heard such great things about hammockgear, so I'm going that route. I'm getting the phoenix 20 degree 3/4 length UQ (with some overstuff maybe). I'll also have a 3/4 z rest so I should be good for a mid april start on the AT.
Oh yeah! since I started doing the hammock thing I figured they would be the best thing to use for the AT, never worry about open camp sites or shelters, seems like the perfect shelter for the big hike.Originally Posted by conburn

Yep, definitely the way to go for the AT Bmwrider. I've never heard of a differential cut UQ Knotty, what is it?
Edit: Never mind, I guess I am mistaken.
Unless I'm greatly mistaken, one that's cut like a parallelogram rather than a rectangle, with the angles on the parallelogram matching with the asymmetric lay of the hammock. 'Leastwise, that's how I'd do it if my sewing skills and machine were up to the challenge...

All hammock gear UQ's are differentially cut. This means that the material of the inner shells circumference is smaller then that of the outer. This prevents compression of down when hanging the UQ and allows the quilt the UQ to fully loft from underneath. No baffles get compressed. So to try and put it simply the underside against the hammock is flat where as the outer shell lofts up nice and fully. Hope this makes sense. Yes lazy river, I get it, I was under the impression that it ment the cut was smaller at the end near the gathered end where the hammock is smaller, it a difference between top and bottom, thanks for making it clear

+1.. the UQ is very difficult to get fit right without reaching out to adjust.. when I made my UQ and pput the tie outs through the loops I couldn't get rid of the air gaps.. may have been design flaws on my part... it works great without deploying the side pullouts though.

I am waiting to get in really cold weather but so far I love the workmanship on my TeWa freeze. I got 2oz of fill and the loft is awesome. It fits well on my DIY and I am bouncing around waiting on my Warbird. Oh its going to be a good winter. Best of lucK and enjoy.
