    tyvek tape toughness

I was going to buy some Tyvek tape and use it to make a few stuff sacks and a food bag to hang PCT style. My question is; how tough and sticky is the Tyvek tape? Can I rely on it keeping a seam sealed and connected?

When I make coozies, the aluminum tape is amazingly tough and grabs on tight. If I use duct tape on a project, I can pull and get an edge to come loose. That is sorta what I'm trying to figure out before I decide to buy a roll of tape.

Thank you. Instead of washing, I may just throw them in the dryer (cool setting) with some damp towels.

We have used washed tyvek and tyvek tape for large bear bags for about two years. Never had a failure, even when holding 50-60 lbs of group food. We spin the end of the bag into a bight and tie off to the bear rope as a sheet bend. Simple, foolproof and really cheap.

    * Toughness: The tape is extremely tough. It's pretty hard to cut with teeth (and tastes horrid). And as for the stick factor, let's just say you should do not want to let the stuff touch either itself or tyvek in any spot you don't want it to stay. Just think about trying to pull apart the closure on a sealed Tyvek mailer (it deconstructs the fabric instead of releasing).
    * Wetness durability- Wash your Tyvek before, or after; my experience is that it makes no difference. I wash my fabrics before taping. I just ensure a clean and dry surface before taping.

PM me your details and I'll get a bit on the way to you. Build a few sacks and stuff and let us know what you think.

What trail said. I made a bivy out of tyvek then washed it. The tape is waterproof and the glue is stronger than tyvek. In my research, I found a whitewater raft company that recommends tyvek tape for sealing punctures.

I have also used carpet tape for tyvek projects. It is just as strong, and a bit lighter, but it's a double-sided tape... ok, it's really a layer of adhesive with a few fibers to hold it together. Tyvek tape is about $12 a roll, if memory serves...

Thank you very much but after not being able to find any around localy, I ordered a roll online. Shipping was only $4 so I went for it. I really appreciate the offer though!

And yes, it's good to hear how tough it is. Some tapes stick and other really friggin' stick! Tyvek is one of those. I love those!
