Trying to get a feel for performance

I have not used an underquilt and wondering about something. I currently use a Reflectix matt under me and have messed around with a Thermarest on top of that. I am wondering with either or both of these things being used, how much additional protecton am I getting from a bottom quilt? In other words, how much will the use of a bottom quilt expand the temperature range I will feel comfortable with? I know it is subjective, but I'm wondering if I'll gain an extra 10 degrees of comfort, 15, 20, 5?

    well

    it depends on the underquilt?

if you're comparing a -20 rated underquilt to your thermarest and a reflectix you're in for a treat

it'll be way warmer, and more comfortable

but if you went with a 40 degree quilt, and tried to use it at 0 degrees, you'd be missing your pad and reflectix

I just made the transition from pads and reflectix to a quilt. I only used pads down to about 40F and was never cold with a warm sleeping bag but wanted to go colder this winter.

Temperature aside what you'll get with the quilt is NO condensation, more comfort, and no sliding off the pad. I tried my 0 degree quilt at about 38 F this week and was toasty!

Under quilts alone will "generally" easily take to you their ratings but I like to reserve about 10 degrees. So my 20 degree gets me through the 30's just fine with no additional pads or insulation. As was previously stated, once you go with the properly rated under quilt you will never look back.

Once you UQ you will simply can the pads as unneeded except in warm weather...
I got a 20°. With that I can vent up, or add a CDT in the UQ to go down.
I think the trick is to go 10° lower than you think you will normally need. Imma toooooooo old for deep Wintah crap, so... works for me.

This is has been my experience as well as the others I have talked into buying an underquilt. They are getting priced more reasonably so definitely get one and try it out for yourself.
