    Hammock demonstration

So this semester is in full swing, the homework is being handed out and the reports due pile up. BUT one good assignment is coming out of the woodwork. A demonstration speech in my Public Speaking class. I have to demonstrate something to the class for approximately 5 - 7 minutes on October 18. Not bad. I was thinking of showing the class how to set up a hammock and tarp correctly. (And show it off ) Ya know the different knots, the few gadgets I have to make it easier, garda hitch, carabiners/rap rings, bloom gorges tarp key, and whatever else I buy before Oct 18. talk about the cottage industries and I am sure hammockforums.net will pop up too.

I was originally thinking of some sort of drums demonstration, but my drum set is way to heavy, and I think this hammock thing would be more original.

Wish somebody would have shown me the ways of the hammock in my public speaking class. Sounds like a great idea!

    That's a pretty cool idea.

Make sure you focus on a particular theme or point. Otherwise people are going to be like "yeah, a hammock...big deal, my grandpa has one in his back yard".

That how my parents were till I showed them what a proper camping hammock was.

Good stuff. I did a demonstration speech on packing for a backpacking trip in my public speaking class way back when. Of course, back then, it was a bunch of heavy stuff in a huge Kelty external frame pack. It's easy to talk about stuff you really like. Have fun with it.

I had to do a demonstrative speech as well in that class and I wish I was in to hammocking then. Excellent idea, but remember to practice it before you present it. As I'm sure you know it's very easy to talk about hammocks and you don't want to go over the time limit. Good luck dude and I'm sure you're going to kill it in that classroom.

Very nice idea, I'm sure the class will enjoy it. I remember doing a demo speech on "how to use a record player" it went pretty well. Of course that was back when I was deep into dance music and DJing. So, it was easy for me to be enthusiastic.

As someone with excellent public speaking skills I'd like to offer a bit of advice. First, keep it simple. Your audience will get distracted easily if you are all over the place trying to touch base on too many topics in the time frame alotted. I advise sticking with JUST proper hammock set-up, covering sag, strap angle, ect. While touching on the different methods for hanging a hammock. (whoopies, huggers, cinch bukle, ect.) Also, explaining how laying on an angle to the ridgeline gives a flatter lay. There are enough details about the hammock alone to squeeze into a 5-7min speech. Adding the tarp in may be a bit of information overload.

I can just about promise if you stay on the subject of "hanging a hammock" and cover all the details clearly and concisely you will get a good grade. Of course you can't forget practice, practice, practice. I would always practice in front of a mirror a few times and then at least once in the location where I had to give the speech before the final "performance".

The only concern I would have is where are you gonna hang & lay in a hammock during your speech?
