I think car camping is the way to go. Moose River should be good. I am going on a hike tomorrow and will try to set up my hammock there afterwards and spend the night, so I'll let you know what condition the place is in at the moment.

What I could do is get there early, find a large campsite for us, then drive back to the sign-in spot at the entrance near Inlet, and leave a note there with the campsite number. I'll look for spot near Moose River.

I was at Cedar Lakes last weekend. It was wet with a lot of blowdown on the trails. I am sure the MRP is fine. They did some nice work on the road, new culverts etc...

Count me in for the trip. I can head up Friday and give you a hand if you need/want one. I'll probably plan on Fri and Sat nights in camp somewhere.

I just camped up at Moose River Plains on Sunday night, decided to take Monday off work. I spoke to a ranger who was going around checking up on people. He said by the middle of October it will be hunting season and will be busy but still perfectly possible to get a spot.

Here's the other problem though - he said that in October any cars in the Moose River Plains have to either be 4WD or have chains in case it snows. Now I've been up there at that time before and had no idea that was a requirement, and snow wasn't even close to happening.... but it is the Adirondacks and anything is possible.

So, we have a problem, unless everybody else has SUVs or snow chains. i have neither. The ranger told me you could camp up at the eastern end at the Cedar River Flow without needing chains. I drove right through to that end but couldn't really find any campsites. There was a bridge over the river where it is quite wide, but the road was blocked beyond that, I thought it was because they were working on the area, but I might have been wrong. There was earth grading equipment around.

So, in conclusion I think it might not be a good idea to go to the MRP. Does anyone have another suggested spot? DuctTape, if you can point me to a website that has some info on the Cedar River campsites I would appreciate it. They will probably have it cleared up by next month.

I have not been to the Adirondacks for a couple of years and longer for canoe routes. However I recall several places. Used to be there were a lot of informal sites on state land. I don't know if the powers that be have changed things. Maybe somebody could check these out:

    1. Not sure what the issues would be but Rondaxe and S Rondaxe roads run through state land near inlet. I recall driving through there years ago to get to Rondaxe lake outlet - nice 1 day canoe trip.

    2. There is informal camping around Stoney Creek Ponds by Coreys off Rt 3

    3. There used to be camping along Floodwood Rd

    4. There was camping at a put in for Follensby Clear pond

I can think of several more places I am less sure about. I guess I need to take a ride. ;-) I may buy a set of chains anyway.

Crawfish, you might know of a car-accessible free campsite around Inlet or Old Forge, or even Speculator..... I'm concerned about getting a spot at Cedar River. I'm looking up nothermark's recommendations now.
