    On the rocks (pic heavy)

I had a few days left of my vacation and the weather was supposed to be nice, so I decided to take a trip to the archipelago in the Baltic Sea. Google Maps of the area. I took a ferry to the island of Nåttarö, these ferrys run most of the year unless the weather or ice is too bad. Now when the normal vacation period is over and the schools have started the ferries don't run everyday like they do in summer. link to map of how I travelled, blue is by boat, green is on foot.

I walked around the island, starting at the southern tip and an almost unbroken horizon. It was windy, and the surf was noisy. I took a lunch break on the southeastern side. The view sure beats the places where I usually eat lunch. And everything tastes good outdoors after some exercise.

After walking around the island without a map for couple of hours I put up camp on the eastern shore. The wind was from southwest. I actually had to move camp because the surf was too noisy at the first spot.

The was an almost rectangular niche in the cliff. Very well protected.

Sea view from the bedroom window - for free!

I woke up to a beautiful sunrise

If a tree falls in the forest and noone hangs from it....what then?

I took the ferry to the next island - Utö. There's a military firing range on the island, and they had some old tanks standing there. I couldn't resists the temptation. It doesn't look like it but I'm hanging. And I got a bit stressed almost expecting someone to come yelling at me for fooling around with their museum pieces. Good thing the whoopie slings make deployement fast.

I put up camp on the eastern shore of Utö, this was the first site but it was too exposed. You can't put a tent peg into Swedish bedrock.

Second site. The wind (slight breeze) was blowing lenghtwise. I didn't think it would have such great effect, but it also got a bit colder during the night. Not really miserable, but too cool.

Utö has a bakery and some shops. The restaurant and shop on Nåttarö was closed until next year.

Dramatic clouds over the Baltic Sea.

The next day I took the ferry to the mainland and walked most of the way home (about 30 km, map here). Small country roads roads and hiking trails through a national park.

Now I need to trim my kit. Too heavy, and too bulky. And with merino wool clothing you don't need that many spare clothes.

The whoopie slings were wonderful. Soo much easier to set up and adjust. I also got adjustable lines for the tarp. I haven't made up my mind about the ridgeline yet. It's nice, but makes it harder to get the moskito netting away from the face. And I'm getting some more Figure 9's. Wonderul invention for us knot-impaired people.

If you want some more pics, i put up an Slideshow with larger format pics. I hope you enjoyed the trip report.

For a last minute trip that looked beautiful. Great pictures, thanks for sharing.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. - E. B. White (1899 - 1985)
