My two friends and I are planning to go do the Art Loeb the 14th of Oct. We were initially planning on doing the whole thing, but seeing as we probably only have 4-5 days total to be out with driving and everything it might be a little too long. Couple of questions....Do you know if there are any good 20-25 mile loops that connect with the first or second section? What temps would we likely experience? and since there isnt that many water sources on the trail, how much water did you fellas find yourself carrying while hiking?

Lots of water can get awfully heavy when climbing straight up
Have you done section 3? It's more popular due to the views.
Here's a potential 21 miler: Park at Black Balsom.
Day 1 - Art Loeb (146) to Deep Gap.
Make camp and slack pack Cold Mtn.
Day 2 - Art Loeb to DB BoyScout camp. Pick up the Little East Fork Trail (107)
and make camp at Ivestor Gap or Shining Rock Gap.
    Day 3 - Hike out.

We had temps in the low 50s. There are lots of reliable water sources up there.

I can put together a loop for you on sections 1 & 2 but there would have to be some road walking () involved.

On our trip we carried 2 liters each. I normally carry 3 but didn't want the added weight.

Sounds like a great trip was had. Started off with children and ended with children. Such good parents you two are. I've done the section from the BRP to Cedar Mt to the Fish Hatchery. Spent the night at the shelter where we were visited all night long by a troop, not family... TROOP, of skunks. I was leading a group of juvenile delinquents and fortunately we made it through the night with no foul odors. Did I mention I was with delinquents? They did their best to antogonize the rodents, how we came out that without smelling is beyond me. I think they took up residence under the platform for that shelter.

Thanks for posting RF & HB!
That's a nice way to go Muskrat. The only stink at the shelter was us

Sounds like an awesome trip! I've done the boy scout camp to Deep gap and up the stairs to Shining Rock, and that's a crazy steep section.
I guess you like that Fanno, HB?
    Miss you guys!
