Learning the Ropes-- info on DIY Underquilt

I have had a ENO Doublenest for a couple of years and have camped in it a few times and loved it! I recently ordered a Hennessy Hex Fly and some whoopie slings for new additions to my set up. I am hoping to try them out next weekend.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a DIY under quilt that won't cost me a fortune. I will probably only need it for nights down into the 40's. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum from west Texas.

Take a look at a PLUQ as an inexpensive DIY UQ. That may be what you are looking for.

Welcome to Hf from Indiana! There's a lot of good information on under quilts in the diy section, and kind folks willing to help. I started with the PLUQ (poncho liner under quilt), very easy to make with or without sewing, but 40* is pushing the limits IMO. There is a good "sticky" thread on the IX (Insultex) under quilt that may be better for 40*, but will require some sewing. Some have even made UQ out of an old sleeping bag. Good luck, HangEasy!

Theres a smashing instruction set with a printable jpg from a guy who made some for his kids, I think its on gear-report.com, titled How to make a camping hammock underquilt from a sleeping bag... I go in search of donor military surplus on the morrow to try it myself as England is getting a wee bit cool for the sheepskin underblanket I've been using! Welcome to the HF btw from a fellow noob

Welcome aboard from Florida. Give it a couple of weeks and you'll think you know everything there is to know about UQ's(under quilts). Until somebody, maybe Rodtri3, develops a better mousetrap or UQ. Enjoy the fun!

I,m in the same boat ENO DN for three plus years and I still need to do something for UQ. I'm looking at a sleeping bag mod, a poncho liner, or IX for my first UQ. DIY GEAR SUPPLY has good pricing on IX. Look in to an adjustable structural ridge line, it helped a lot with a flatter diagonal lay. Good luck with your UQ.
