Okay - I'm going to have practice with the hemmers that came with the machine. There were originally 4 (1/4", 3/8", 5/8", 7/8"), but the 1/4" isn't around anymore. I think I'll start with the 7/8" on scrap to avoid the problem Grizz may be having. Maybe I can go down the scale as I improve.

It seems that for my machine, a Kenmore, the only option is 2 mm. Does anyone know if preeser feet are universal from brand to brand?

There are universal feet available. There are basically two types, IIRC. Low shank and high shank. Take a picture of your machine's foot and take it to the store with you. They should know what type yours is. Maybe want to buy from a place with a good return policy...

That's what I have - pretty old though. The hemming feet came with the accessories. We bought it second hand over 25 years back. Had it in to the local sewing machine mechanic years back and he said that the internal gears are plastic or glass fiber filled plastic or something like that and that when they wear out, they can't be fixed. For what it cost and the years of service we've had from it, I wouldn't complain.
