Top quilt getting flatter and flatter

Ive washed my down top quilt twice now with down soap..in a commercial washer..in a commercial dryer. I use this quilt almost everyday. Seems like the loft is just not fluffing up like it was new. Does the down eventually 'wear out'. losing its loft after extensive use? thanx

I'm no expert by any means, but I have a 8 year old JRB Stealth that has been washed about 20 times and still fluffs like a champ.
I would imagine down quality has something to do with it.

Maybe a stupid question, but did you throw something in the dryer with the quilt to break-up the down clumps (i.e. tennis balls)?

Did you add tennis balls to the dryer? I have just washed my TQ and UQ for the very first time and the fluff was good again / better than before washing. Every 10-15 minutes I stopped the dryer to work the downs by hand (helping them to stop sticking to another) -- not really sure if it was necessary but it definitely was not for the bad. I used a mild detergent for wool. Hope there's a solution for you to get your loft back!

Tennis balls, clean old sneakers, etc in the dryer. Maybe extra rinse cycle or two in the washer. Got to get the detergent out.

All of the above and NO FABRIC SOFTENER! Down should last pretty much forever. Good luck!

I'm not sure if it's worth the money, but there's special soap for down products at most outdoor stores.

thanx for the replies. but yea.. used my tennis shoe in the dryer. The quilt comes out of the dryer really fluffed up.. but just doesnt seem to hold the loft very long anymore. The quilt actually came from one of the reputable Cottage Industries here on the forum. hmm.. maybe i will try and contact them.. thanx all

I have down products that are many years old, though I have not washed some of them very much. They all puff up pretty much as new.

My PeaPod is at least 4 years old, and I have never washed it. Now, I don't really ever contact most parts of this quilt, admittedly. It is of course always on the outside of my hammock, and if that wasn't enough I almost always have various layers of clothing on when I am inside the hammock/pod. Never less than jeans and tee shirt, usually way more than that. Still, 4 years of backyard and camp ground use plus several week long wilderness trips is lots of opportunity for accumulating dirt from external sources. It still puffs up like a balloon, I can't tell any difference from new!

I really don't understand why yours is getting flatter and flatter. Could something be wrong with the "down" soap? VCould the rinse not be adequate?
